Mattress Size Chart: Pick the Right Bed

Mattress sizes aren't intuitive — a "Full" sounds generous until two adults try to sleep on one, and a King sounds luxurious until it won't fit through your hallway. Buyers remorse on a mattress is expensive.

This free chooser does the thinking for you. Tell us how many sleepers, your bedroom size, and whether you're a sprawler, and we'll recommend the right mattress size with exact dimensions and room-fit notes — then show you the best-rated mattresses, frames, and sheets in that size on Amazon.

What Mattress Size Do You Need?

Too small and you’re fighting for space; too big and it swallows the room. Three quick answers and we’ll pick your size.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular mattress size?

The Queen (60 x 80 inches) is the most popular by far — roomy for one sleeper, workable for two, and it fits in most bedrooms from about 10 x 10 feet. Bedding is also easiest to find and cheapest in Queen.

What size mattress do I need for two people?

A Queen is the minimum most couples find comfortable long-term; a King (76 x 80) gives each sleeper a Twin XL of space. Choose California King (72 x 84) if either sleeper is tall — it is 4 inches narrower but 4 inches longer than a standard King.

Will a King mattress fit in my room?

You need at least a 12 x 12 foot room for a King, plus enough clearance to walk around it — aim for 24–30 inches on each side. Also measure your doorways and stairwells before delivery day; Kings do not bend.

What is the difference between Twin and Twin XL?

Both are 38 inches wide, but Twin XL is 80 inches long versus 75 for a standard Twin — those 5 extra inches matter for taller sleepers. Twin XL is also the standard dorm size, which is why bedding for it is easy to find.

How thick should a mattress be?

For most adults, 10–12 inches hits the sweet spot of comfort layers over support. Side sleepers and heavier sleepers tend to prefer 12–14 inches. Anything under 8 inches is really only suitable for kids, bunks, or occasional guest use.
